Valentine’s Day

Hey Everyone!

I have decided to have a potluck on Friday for the student’s in the class for Valentine’s Day and to celebrate all our hard work in January and February. Here are some acceptable food items for the potluck:

  • Samosas
  • Juice Boxes
  • Hummus & Crackers
  • Mini Pinwheel Pizzas
  • Peanut Free Treat Items

Let’s remember that we are a nut free school so please keep this in mind when buying your food items. We will have the potluck & games & crafts party at 1:15-2:15pm on Friday.

If you are sending Valentine’s Day cards to hand out to the class please make sure you provide one for all students. We have 29 students in the class. A class list is provided below.

Science Fair Information

Hey Everyone!

As you have requested, here is all the information for the Wood Buffalo Regional Science Fair. Click on the link and it will take you to the website. When you get to the website click on students and parents in the top right hand corner.

Our Walter & Gladys Hill Science Fair will be on March 16th. More information TBA.

Information for Friday March 27: (from the wbrsf.ca website)

  • Students in Grades 4, 5 and 6 are to arrive at the Grand Ballroom – Shell Place at MacDonald Island Park  at 8:15 am for registration. Students register and set-up their projects. They will receive lunch in the Exhibit Hall.Students in Grades 7-12 are staggered so they will arrive at 8:30am after the younger students.
  • Parents are welcome to stay with their students during this time but will be asked to leave at 8:45am. The exhibit hall will be closed to everyone except participants, judges and volunteers between 9:00am and 2:30pm.
  • Parents of Elementary participants are asked to pick up their students by 12:30pm  Parents of JR, IN, and SR students, can arrive at 2:30pm to pick-up their students at the doors to the Exhibit Hall inside the building. We will not allow students to leave the Exhibit Hall without a parent picking them up (without prior consent).
  • Students will be receiving a name tag and t-shirt that they will have to wear (along with a name tag) for the duration of the weekend.
  • Students will food allergies or other dietary considerations will be accommodated.

Information for Saturday March 28: (from the wbrsf.ca website)

  • All students are to arrive prior to 9:30am.
  • The doors will open for public and media viewing at 9:30am.
  • Students can visit other projects but are encouraged to stay near their own projects to explain and share their learning with the parents and public touring the projects!
  • The Awards Ceremony will start around 11:30am and clean-up will take place afterwards.
  • There will be no lunch served on Saturday, we hope to have students out of there by 1:00pm.

Math

  • Students are working through Unit 5: Lessons 1-3 (pgs. 162-175) in their textbooks (there will be a quiz on this Monday Feb. 10th)

Language Arts

  • Spelling: Students are working on spelling and building their vocabulary with bi-weekly spelling words.  Students will be bringing these words home on Monday and will have a test every 2 weeks on Monday on those words. All these tests are available on powerschool within a few days of them writing them. (WTW Test on Feb. 10th)
  • Reading: Please continue reading for 20 minutes every night, have a parent sign off on the reading and making sure to complete book reports.
  • Reading Strategies: We have been working on inferencing using the book Crime, Body, Suspect.
  • Writing: Our class is starting narrative story writing Feb. 4th.

Social Studies

  • Students are continuing to learn about Local Government and how it works.

Science

  • Students are currently learning about the sun and planets this week. There are two quizzes about the sun this week on Tues. Feb 4th & Fri. Feb 7th. Information about the quizzes are here.

Leader in Me

  • Our focus from mid-January to mid-February is Love & Respect, Reflecting & Habit #4 Think Win Win.

Genius Hour

  • We are starting to think about our Term 2 projects on Friday, Feb. 7th. Parent letter & more information on that shortly.

Information on the Sun

Hey everyone!

We are almost done one of the major components of our Sky Science Unit “the sun”! Here is a few videos on the topic that I think are helpful. Also we will be having two quizzes on the topic. Quiz #1 on Tuesday, Feb. 4th – Solar Flares, Sunspots, and Solar Winds (all that will be on this one is matching the definitions to the words). Then Quiz #2 will be Friday Feb. 7th – on the layers of the sun, sun’s mass, how the sun produces energy, orbiting, and sun safety.

All the information for the tests can be found on your child’s google classroom.

Decimal Help :) (Multiplication & Division)

Hey Everyone!

Here is a wonderful video explaining multiplication & division of decimals! He is clear & makes it a very simple process. If you or your child is having trouble understanding decimal arithmetic, please please please contact me! I’d love to talk you through it, clear anything up or have a sit down with you & your child & go over how to better help them by breaking it down.

Parents/Thank You

  • I am still looking for 1-2 parent representative(s) for our parent council.  As we will be planning a Grade Six Trip and Farewell, we would like to have as many parents as possible have input in helping us plan and fundraise. This is a super important role for our class & school and we’d appreciate anyone who is able to take on this role.

Math

  • Students are finishing Unit 3: Decimals. Test Monday Jan.27
  • Students will begin Unit 5 in their math textbook on Tuesday Jan. 28
  • We are continuing to work on fact fluency (simple addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division). Please continue to practice long division using the help post I provided last week & the practice booklets that were sent home (due date on Jan 30th).

Language Arts
